Dorset care home unites community to mark World Alzheimer's Month

Members of the local community came together at Verwood House care home throughout September for a programme of activities designed to raise awareness and understanding of dementia.

Verwood House, on Ringwood Road in Verwood, marked World Alzheimer’s Month with dementia awareness sessions and the introduction of a new comforting companion for residents.

During September, colleagues at the care home also donned denim and purple helping to spark conversations about dementia and show their support for people living with the condition. Purple is the official, internationally recognised colour of the Alzheimer's and dementia awareness movement.

Last week Verwood House welcomed David Moore, Head of Dementia at Hamberley Care Homes, to host a series of informal dementia sessions. The sessions were accompanied by a Cheese & Wine Afternoon, led by Verwood House’s Dementia Champions.

Residents, relatives and members of the local community were invited to ask questions, share their experiences and learn more about dementia in a relaxed and supportive environment.

David Moore said: “The dementia workshops held at Verwood House as part of World Alzheimer’s Month were a really positive example of how important it is to support families as well as the person living with dementia. There was a real sense of connection in the room, with relatives asking questions, offering reassurance to each other and learning from one another’s experiences. Creating these opportunities is so important, because no family should feel they have to navigate dementia alone.”

World Alzheimer’s Month also provided an opportunity for Verwood House to introduce its new HUG Doll, a soft and comforting companion designed to be cuddled and held.

Emilia Turner, Wellbeing Coach and Dementia Champion at Verwood House, said:
“World Alzheimer’s Month is important to us because we care for and support people living with dementia every day. Our HUG Doll brings so much comfort, reassurance and joy to our residents. Sometimes a cuddle can say more than words ever could, offering a sense of warmth, security and companionship.”

By bringing the community together, Verwood House hopes to encourage open conversations about dementia and ensure families feel connected and supported.
