Cubs Turn Trash Into Treasure at Keynsham Care Home

Cubs Turn Trash Into Treasure at Keynsham Care Home

The Saltford Cubs proved one person’s rubbish really is another person’s treasure when they teamed up with residents at a Keynsham care home to transform old toys into colourful features for a brand-new sensory garden.

The youngsters visited Meryton Place Care Home, Bath Road, where residents and Cubs rolled up their sleeves to create music and sensory walls using recycled toys bought from the Keynsham Recycling Centre shop.

Resident Martin Christie said: “We really had to use our imagination and a lot of ingenuity to find new uses for the old toys, but together we worked it out.”

There was plenty of laughter throughout the day as generations came together to swap stories, play board games and even try their hand at using tools.

Resident Brenda Serjeant said she was delighted to welcome the children to the home.

She added: “I've not had any grandchildren of my own, it's like having grandchildren!”

Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Hannah Phillips said residents loved every minute of the visit.
She added: “Our residents truly enjoyed getting stuck in, exploring the toys, and chatting with the children.

“It was a wonderful opportunity for our local Cubs to take part in a community project. They thoroughly enjoyed chatting with the residents, listening to their stories, and learning from their experiences.

“A huge thank you to the Saltford Cubs for visiting and to the wonderful volunteer leaders who support them, including some of the Scouts. It was a joyful, memorable day for everyone, and we hope they will visit again soon!”

Saltford Cubs are part of the 1st Saltford Scout Group and welcome local children aged between eight and 10, with a strong focus on community activities and teamwork.
