Kent Care Home Residents Celebrate Life Of Literary Icon Edith Nesbit

Residents at a Sevenoaks care home named after The Railway Children author Edith Nesbit enjoyed a celebration of her life and work at a special literary event.

Nesbit House Care Home in Badgers Mount hosted the festivities, at which members of the Edith Nesbit Society joined residents to talk about the literary legend’s books.

The special event was masterminded by Nesbit House Wellbeing Lead Iestyn Gadd, who also included a deep dive into the classic film based on The Railway Children, including its stirring film score.

Iestyn said: “Everyone is familiar with The Railway Children and members of the Edith Nesbit Society bring everything to life in such a lovely way.”

Adding a special note to the day was a surprise visit from Louise Camby and her mother Norma, granddaughter and daughter of Johnny Douglas, composer of the iconic score for the 1970 film adaptation starring Jenny Agutter.

Louise shared heartfelt stories, rare musical excerpts, and behind-the-scenes glimpses into her grandfather’s distinguished musical career.

Iestyn added: “It was wonderful to have Louise and Norma visit on the day, and hear about how the famous composer planned his work.”

Nesbit House resident John Nelson is a proud member of the Edith Nesbit Society who has completed research into the author’s life. He was delighted to share his knowledge with society members on the day.

Iestyn Gadd hailed the day a great success. He said: “It was an honour to connect with such incredible literary and cinematic legacies all in one day. Thanks to everyone who joined us in celebrating these amazing talents.”

The Edith Nesbit Society, founded in 1996, continues to preserve and promote the legacy of Edith Nesbit. She was born in London in 1858 and died in New Romney, Kent, in 1824.

In addition to The Railway Children, Nesbit authored The Treasure Seekers, Five Children and It, and numerous other works.

She was also a political activist and co-founder of the Fabian Society, leaving a lasting impact on both literature and social reform.
